The Ehpad fear the worst. While the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the Covid-19, many directors and caregivers of retirement homes, still marked by the massive deaths of seniors during the heat wave of 2003, fear a massacre.
Last Friday, the main federations of the sector (FHF, Fehap, Synerpa, AD-PA…) alerted the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, of the risk of seeing the epidemic lead to more than 100,000 deaths among residents of Ehpad, lack of protective equipment. In some places, the coronavirus crisis is "catastrophic" because "the specific symptoms of the elderly were not known and the barrier measures were applied too late" , underlines Gaël Durel, president of the Association of coordinating doctors and of the medico-social sector.
