After a 38-year career in the U.S. Department of Justice, Dana Buente, a senior FBI attorney was asked last Friday to resign, NBC Network reports. The reason for Buanta's role at this point is unclear, but according to the publication, two sources involved in the decision to fire Buanta have claimed that it came from the top ranks of the U.S. Department of Justice and not directly from FBI Director Christopher Ray.

Buente's departure comes from criticism voiced by Fox News about his role in interrogating former national security adviser Michael Flynn, accused of providing false information to the FBI as part of an investigation into suspicions of alleged ties to Russia during the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign .

Flynn, an esteemed general in the U.S. military who served less than a month in his role as a Trump adviser, resigned. But his supporters claimed that Flynn was personally pursued by intelligence agencies in the United States. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the closure of the case against Flynn, citing, among other reasons, his FBI investigation was carried out "without a legitimate basis."

It was also reported that Lou Dobbs, a Fox News presenter, said on April 27 that there were "shocking reports that Buanta was acting in concert with Ray to prevent the release of evidence that would have cleared General Flynn."

The FBI spokeswoman announced that Buanta would end his role on June 30. "Few people have served so well in so many audit positions at the top of the legal department," Ray said in an FBI statement.
