US election 2020: why it matters for Donald Trump and Joe Biden on Pennsylvania

2020-11-01T14:12:20.468Z

Four appearances by Trump, a speech by Biden: Shortly before the US presidential election, the candidates are focused on Pennsylvania. Why is the state so crucial?

After four weeks of swing state hopping (North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida) I'm back in Pennsylvania, a state that could be decisive in this election.

So crucial that both Donald Trump and Joe Biden spent their last election weekend here: Trump made four appearances on Saturday alone, Biden was planning a speech in Philadelphia for Sunday.

Why is the State of Pennsylvania so important?

The "New York Times"

publishes current polls every day, at the moment Biden is eight to nine percentage points ahead of Trump on the US average.

In some states, Biden has an even bigger lead, in others it lags behind.

If you sort the states - from arguably the most Democratic to the most Republican - Pennsylvania is pretty much in the middle.

Because it still has many electorates, so it has special weight in the election of the president, Pennsylvania could tip the scales that ultimately decides who will be US president (how the US electoral system works. Finally understandable ").

That's why half the world's press is here at the moment - at least that's what it feels like.

"Imagine if Czech television interviewed me yesterday," a local Republican politician told me.

"And before that the Danes. And before that the French!"

He said this with a mixture of pride and concern.

Of course, it's nice to have so many guests.

But it also reminded him of what was at stake in Pennsylvania.

Many media outlets are also here because they fear riots should the result of the presidential election run short.

Some authorities are preparing for protests.

The people of Erie County, where I am now, are amazingly calm in the face of the doom and gloom.

"Of course, both sides will be angry if their candidate loses," said my taxi driver, a Trump supporter, army veteran and a staunch gun bearer.

"But I don't take to the streets if the outcome of democracy doesn't suit me. If Biden wins, I pray that he'll do a good job. That's it."

I hope that many will do the same and that the election and the time thereafter will be peaceful.
