Munich - New Year's Eve is for many a ritual that always follows a certain sequence.

In addition to fondue or raclette, fireworks and sparkling wine, this includes a cult TV program: "Dinner for One".

Every year anew millions of Germans watch Miss Sophie's 90th birthday party on television.

The lady's old friends have already died, so butler James slips into the roles of the four guests and has to drink a lot of alcohol - numerous laughs are programmed.

The sketch with Freddie Frinton and May Warden has been broadcast on German television for over 50 years.

The sketch is also broadcast on Swiss and Austrian television.

Our TV guide will tell you where, when and in which versions you can see the piece.

"Dinner for One" on New Year's Eve 2020 on German TV

In 1963 the TV version of "Dinner for One" was recorded in the NDR studios in Hamburg.

Initially, the ARD and the third programs only broadcast the sketch when there were gaps in the program; it was not until 1972 that the play was broadcast regularly on New Years Eve.

"Dinner for One" in the live stream of ARD and other programs

Both the ARD and the third programs offer a live stream on the Internet in addition to the classic TV broadcast.

This means that "Dinner for One" can not only be watched on the television screen.

Miss Sophie's 90th birthday can also be followed on laptops, tablets or smartphones.

A suitable app is available for the main ARD program, free of charge from iTunes (for Android devices) or in the Google Play Store (for Apple devices), depending on the device's operating system.

"Dinner for One" on TV: broadcast on ORF

Today "Dinner for One" is not only popular with German TV viewers, our neighbors from Austria also know and appreciate the sketch.

This is why ORF1 is also showing the NDR recording of "Dinner vor One".

The station can only be received unencrypted via cable or terrestrial (via DVB-T) in some border areas.

"Dinner for One" in the ORF live stream

Why bother about the encrypted TV signal when you can also use a live stream?

If you get this idea, you will quickly be disappointed: The ORF stream is only available to users from Austria.

Resourceful Internet connoisseurs can bypass this obstacle with so-called geoblocking.

Programs set up a virtual private network (VPN for short) that assigns the user an IP address from the country of origin of the live stream, in this case Austria.

Sounds too dubious?

"Dinner for One" on TV: broadcast on SRF

The Swiss also watch "Dinner for One" on New Year's Eve.

However, Swiss television (SRF) is now showing, among other things, a self-produced recording of the play with Freddie Frinton and May Warden.

The same version can also be seen on Swedish and Norwegian TV screens and is slightly shorter than the NDR version.

Swiss television can be received in German-speaking Switzerland via DVB-T (digital antenna television).

In southern Germany, especially in border regions, digital cable providers have SRF in their programs.

However, like its colleagues from Austria, the broadcaster is pushing for their programs in Germany to be encrypted.

"Dinner for One" in the live stream of the SRF

Swiss television now also offers its program as a live stream on the Internet.

As with our colleagues from Austria, the stream can only officially be received from Switzerland.

We have already summarized above how you can bypass this ban and still watch the Swiss version of "Dinner for One" online.

The procedure works just like receiving a live stream from Austria.

"Dinner for One": Watch the recording on the Internet

If you missed the TV broadcast or would like to watch the sketch again the morning after the New Year's Eve party, you can easily find it on the Internet, for example on YouTube.

There are also several parodies circulating there, including a version with Otto Walkes as "Miss Otti" and Ralf Schmitz as the butler.
