More and more cyclists are dying on Munich's streets - experts are alarmed!

There were fewer accidents and fewer injuries on Munich's streets in 2020 - despite the growing population and more cars.

Only in cycling were there significantly more accidents and injuries.

Munich - The Corona year 2020 differs in many respects from its predecessors.

This can also be seen in the current traffic statistics from the Munich * police, which were presented on Friday by the new police vice-president, Michael Dibowski.

Because: With 44,972 traffic accidents in the city and district of Munich, the number has fallen by 16.8 percent compared to 2019. But there is one outlier: the accidents with cyclists.

Because while most of the key figures are significantly lower than in previous years, there were 3420 bicycle accidents in 2020, an increase of 8.2 percent compared to the previous year.

3089 cyclists were injured, 373 seriously.

“Almost ten years ago there were around 1,000 fewer accidents,” says Dibowski.

More cyclists on the way - "This also increases the probability"

However, around 20 percent more cyclists were on the road in 2020.

“This also increases the likelihood of accidents,” explains Dibowski.

Due to the increasing numbers, the ADFC is calling on the city of Munich to further expand the cycling infrastructure.

"The enthusiasm for cycling, which has increased since the pandemic, must not lead to record accident figures," says ADFC boss Andreas Schön.

“Cycling shouldn't be a risk.” But what the police figures say: almost half of the cycling accidents (46.2 percent) in which a second road user was involved were caused by the cyclist himself.

“Hairdressing” pedelecs, which can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, is particularly dangerous.

That increases the risk of accidents immensely, said Dibowski.

Although the officials were only able to seize 36 manipulated pedelecs in 2020, the number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher.

21 people died in a traffic accident in 2020 - seven of them cyclists

The saddest number in any traffic statistic is the death toll.

21 people died in a traffic accident in 2020 - just as many as in the previous year.

“That is definitely 21 too many,” said Dibowski.

Here, too, the sad leader: the cyclists.

Seven of them lost their lives in a traffic accident.

"That means that every third person who died in traffic in the past year was a cyclist," Dibowski calculates.

There were particularly frequent crashes last year on the route from Nymphenburger Strasse to Lachnerstrasse.

There were 70 accidents here.

Behind it are Ludwigstrasse / Leopoldstrasse to Ungererstrasse (68 accidents) and Bayerstrasse / Landsberger Strasse to Willibaldstrasse (65 accidents).

It is particularly pleasing that the number of accidents on the way to school have decreased by a full 56.5 percent.

The corona-related school closings will have been the decisive factor here.
