Erding - MTU has been repairing engines in Erding for 15 years.

This should stay that way even after the air base closes at the end of 2024.

The city and the company agree on this.

MTU has been repairing engines in Erding for 15 years.

The company uses halls on the air base site for this purpose.

It should stay that way even after the area has been converted from military to civilian use.

To confirm this wish, the company and the city have signed a letter of intent.

In the key issues paper that Klaus Günther, Head of Military Programs at MTU, and Lord Mayor Max Gotz signed in the town hall, those involved aim to continue MTU's engine overhaul on the air base premises.

"In order to ensure that MTU continues to use the required partial area, agreements must be made," explains city spokesman Christian Wanninger.

The Bundeswehr and the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (Bima) also played a decisive role in these agreements.

Due to the corona, the other parties would not have been able to participate in the signing, said Wanninger.

The trigger for the declaration is the closure of the air base announced for December 31, 2024 and the conversion that will then begin. In particular, the planned acquisition of the approximately 365 hectare area by the city raises a number of legal questions. Against this background, it is important to guarantee that MTU will remain, said Gotz. Since the company offers highly specialized jobs, “we want to keep this know-how in Erding”. It should be clarified “whether the city can acquire the MTU site and sell it on to the company, or whether it makes more sense for Bima to initially let the site to MTU,” explains the mayor. In addition to the purchase price or rent, the unanswered questions include the treatment of the area under planning law and the developability of the area, its infrastructural independence, rights of way and easements.

The Bundeswehr and MTU are also aiming for successful negotiations because MTU has been commissioned to repair the engines of various weapons systems used by the Bundeswehr and is therefore relevant for the Air Force.

So far, the Bundeswehr has leased buildings and open spaces on the air base to MTU, thereby ensuring that their military equipment is ready for action.

“At the Erding site, we see ideal conditions for uninterrupted cooperation on the current premises and we can certainly imagine expanding the currently around 35,000 square meters of operating space,” said Günther (MTU).
