Venezuela towards a resumption of dialogue

2021-08-15T17:37:55.825Z

Negotiations between the government and the opposition are due to resume at the end of August in Mexico City.

On Friday August 13, the Chavista government of Venezuela and representatives of the opposition signed a memorandum in Mexico City that allows negotiations to begin at the end of this month.

Several attempts at dialogue have taken place since Juan Guaido was appointed interim president of Venezuela by the National Assembly, dominated by the opposition, in January 2019. There was the dialogue under the aegis of the Vatican, then the dialogues of Barbados and finally the discussions of Santo Domingo.

Neither initiative was successful, with both sides accusing each other of bad faith.

But this time, the government and the opposition seem ready to engage in a serious negotiating process.

For the opposition, the priorities concern the presidential and legislative elections, the release of political prisoners and the rehabilitation of its political structures, some of which are prevented from standing for election.
