District - In order to help after the strong earthquake in Haiti on Saturday, the aid organization humedica from Kaufbeuren is sending a three-person team to the Caribbean.

According to the aid organization, the earthquake on Saturday claimed more than 1,400 lives and around 7,000 people were injured.

The humedica emergency services will reach the disaster region on Thursday.

“Houses have collapsed and families have been killed.

Traveling is difficult because a main bridge has collapsed ", reports Gladys Thomas from the humedica partner Fondation" pour les Enfants d´Haiti "directly from the Caribbean island.

More than 1,400 people died in the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday.

The situation worsened due to the tropical storm "Grace", which reached the state the day before yesterday.

“There are many injured.

But the mental strain on the people in Haiti is also enormous, ”explains humedica managing director Johannes Peter.

After the severe earthquake, many people had only just lost everything - the next catastrophe hit them with the tropical storm “Grace”.

A three-person humedica team flies from Frankfurt to the disaster area in order to provide help together with the local partners.

“We are in constant contact with our partners, but also with the coordinating authorities.

We will support the people with everything in our power, ”continued Peter.

Hygiene kits, shelter tents and cooking utensils

For example, the coordination team has a so-called PAUL water backpack with them, with which drinking water can be freed from impurities and made available to the people in the affected regions.

Humedica is also sending personal protective equipment and a medical kit to Haiti, with which, among other things, injured people can receive first aid.

In preparation for a second medical team, the emergency services will get a more detailed picture of the situation on site and assess what help people need most urgently after the first quick help.

Poorest country on the American continent

Humedica has been active on site through local partners since Saturday.

The aid organization in Haiti had a total of 300 hygiene kits and shelter tents to protect them from wind and weather, as well as cooking materials for 150 families and a total of around 500 buckets.

“The situation was confusing.

Nevertheless, we are in the process of bringing relief supplies to the disaster area especially for such cases, ”reports Thomas.

An ambulance financed by humedica in 2017 is in use.

Haiti is considered the poorest country on the American continent.

The island nation is repeatedly shaken by natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

In addition, the political situation has been uncertain for years.

Haiti's President was assassinated four weeks ago.
