There was a terrible accident at an unlocked level crossing in Grainau on Sunday afternoon: an 83-year-old driver overlooked the Zugspitz cog railway and was fatally injured in the collision.

Just this much: According to the police report, the 83-year-old Grainau was traveling south in his Fiat and wanted to drive over the level crossing there in the street “Waldwinkl” in Grainau.
The car was hit by a railcar of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn.
The senior suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident.
Rail traffic between Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen has been temporarily shut down.
According to the current state of knowledge, the more than 100 passengers on the train were uninjured.
The conductor went into shock.
The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is ongoing.
