Opinion | Erdogan reconciles with Israel, but still dreams of "conquering" Jerusalem | Israel today

2022-03-09T21:28:08.390Z

Although the Turkish president seems interested in warming up with Israel, he aspires to see an Islamic influx into the capital • Now that he needs us, an opportunity has arisen to keep the Turks out of the capital and weaken their evil influence there

In the shadow of the "spring" that Erdogan initiated in his country's relations with Israel, Turkey continues to deepen its involvement and influence on the Temple Mount, the Old City and the neighborhoods of East Jerusalem.

The Turkish president encourages "dawa" activities that include economic, community, religious and social assistance, aimed at bringing the Palestinians closer to the Turkish-Islamic heritage and weakening Israel's hold on the capital.

Only recently has Turkey provided Sheikh Jarrah residents with alleged Ottoman-era ownership documents on land in the neighborhood, to assist them in their fight against "settlers and their forged documents."

In addition, the Turks decided a few weeks ago to resume religious trips to Jerusalem and al-Aqsa (after a two-year hiatus due to the corona), with unemployed people receiving money to come to al-Aqsa as tourists and demonstrate a presence there.

At the same time, Turkish charities continue to inject money into Jerusalem, both through the Turkish government aid organization Tika and through other charities such as Our Heritage.

The Turkish president, who identifies himself as the successor to the chain of Ottoman sultans, aspires to renew the days of the empire and considers himself responsible on behalf of Islam for Jerusalem.

In his eyes, Erdogan is the successor to Salah al-Din and the glorious Sultan Suleiman, with the Turks being the "grandchildren" of the two.

As part of this perception, Erdogan maintains close ties with the East Jerusalem Waqf, with the head of the Supreme Muslim Council, Sheikh Akram Sabri (whose recent exit to Turkey is banned) and with Raed Salah, the head of the Islamic Movement's northern and illegal faction. , Who had just recently been released from prison.

While the government pays attention and individual attention to the activities of the terrorist organization Hamas in Turkey and the intention of many terrorist attacks against Israel from there - the last of which only a few months ago - regarding Jerusalem, Israeli activity against the Turks is much minor, if any.

Israel ignores Turkish activity in the capital that spills oil on the wheels of the Palestinian struggle.

She moved to the agenda of renovating the Khan on Chain Street from the Tika funds, a two-minute walk from the Western Wall, and closed her eyes to the cooperation agreement between the Waqf and the Turkish Cultural Center, which acts as the executive arm of the Turkish consulate in Jerusalem.

Erdogan, who has declared that every day that Jerusalem is under occupation is an insult to him, still strives to "conquer" the city through a mass Muslim influx to al-Aqsa.

Turkish associations fund a mass transport of Israeli Arabs to the Temple Mount and even stand behind the "Morabiton" organization - a subsidiary of the northern faction that was outlawed after years of stirring the winds on the mountain and trying to block Jewish visits there.

Turkish flags were hoisted in many places in the Old City, and schools in the east of the city even began to teach the Turkish language.

Now that Erdogan needs us, an opportunity has arisen to keep the Turks away from the capital and weaken their evil influence there.

Their past presence in Jerusalem was a historic accident, and now that her real sons have returned to it - we do not need "partners" to push our feet out of here.
