Three generations of frustration in the relations between the citizens of Israel and the IDF were born during the years of fighting terrorism.
The Palestinian Authority was a terrorist army that the political echelon insisted on framing as a partner for peace, its soldiers were an enemy army the PM asked the IDF to define as colleagues (for joint patrols, to obtain intelligence, to rescue a wounded from Joseph's tomb), but in practice the state was at war.
Only from the days of the Oslo Accords - the decision-makers insisted that the army be a "peace army", one that would manage the conflicts alongside the management of the agreements.
And what was supposed to "paint" the agreements in colors of security - "painted" the senior officer in politicization and blindness.
The generation of "Let the IDF win" expressed the frustration of an army that wanted to fight, one that reminded the forces of the six-day eve during the waiting period, but above it were senior ranks and mostly statesmen who did not operate it, focusing on channeling it into incorrect operating software.
After Operation Defensive Shield, a second generation of frustration developed: the "democratization of war" generation.
It is the frustration of a determined and active army blocked by a host of players who have become part of the new arena.
An army that constantly bargained and felt lacking autonomy in conducting the campaign: Watch women, there is a border, break the silence, there is a law, and a host of other petitioners, all of whom stand in the corridors of the Supreme Court. Which made military activity messy, bargaining, slow and mostly non-autonomous.
And here, under the leadership of Aviv Kochavi, a third generation of frustration has arisen for us, a frustration that I will call the "Israel Blocking Army."
In fact, the army itself has become the one whose job it is to make it clear to the political echelon that a military response is not part of its toolbox, and that among the many modes of response available to decision-makers, there are only economic-civilian options.
After the three rockets landed in Israel, the political echelon demanded that Kochavi give him options for attacking targets in Gaza.
But see this is a miracle - Kochavi's army decided to equip the political echelon only with a recommendation for civil sanctions.
The army also made it clear how much it was operationally prepared for the operation, no less than on the eve of the Wall Guard - one of the operations in which the chief of staff not only did his best to evade actual ground action against Hamas, but - as already revealed - even a fraud operation. Defense Gantz, in his meeting on the eve of the holiday with the heads of the localities in the south, informed them emphatically that "Israel is prepared to make every move necessary to maintain the security of its citizens - in attack and defense."
Well, when the army became the "blocking army of Israel" - it is not clear with which army commanders will make "any move required" on the day of rehabilitation here a prime minister who will give the forces the required order.
Get used to the new frustration: not an army that is not allowed to win;
Nor is an army constantly bargaining;
But an army that itself blocks those who come to activate it.
