Ministers in his government, close confidants, even family members have testified about the storming of the US Capitol – but not Donald Trump. Now a member of the committee of inquiry explains the reason.

The committee of inquiry into the attack on the US Capitol is reluctant to consider a possible subpoena from ex-President Donald Trump.

"The big question that we're still grappling with as a committee is whether there's any benefit in speaking to someone like Donald Trump and asking him to come to us," committee member Adam Kinzinger said Sunday in the US TV.

It remains to be seen whether that will really do anything.

"You see, Donald Trump has made it clear that he doesn't mind not telling the truth," said the Republican.

“He lies all the time.

I would not put it past him to lie even under oath.

Another hearing is planned for Thursday – probably the last before the summer break.

Kinzinger announced further hearings once the panel's final report is released.

If there are still important testimonies, another hearing can in principle be scheduled at any time, says Kinzinger.

The committee is investigating how Trump supporters stormed the seat of the US Congress on January 6, 2021, in which Trump's election defeat by Joe Biden was to be authenticated.

An angry crowd rushed into the building, killing five.

Most recently, Trump had been heavily incriminated at the panel's public hearings.

For example, a confidante of Trump's then chief of staff, Mark Meadows, reported that the ex-president and those around him in the White House knew very well days before January 6 that violence could occur.

But Trump really wanted his supporters to storm the Capitol.
