The summer of 2022 was a record summer.

It has never been so hot in Europe before.

Data from the EU Earth observation program Copernicus confirm this.

Reading - Heat waves and a dramatic drought - the weather in summer 2022 was extreme in Europe.

The summer months from June to August were warmer in Europe than at any time since records began.

This was announced by the EU service Copernicus on Thursday.

Summer 2022: It has never been so hot in Europe

The month of August was by far the hottest ever: the average temperature was 0.8 degrees higher than in the years 1991 to 2020. But even in the summer months from June to August, the values were again 0.4 percent higher than the previous record from 2021, according to the statement.

"A series of intense heat waves across Europe and exceptional drought have resulted in an extreme summer with record high temperatures, drought and fires," stressed Copernicus expert Freja Vamborg.

The scientist once again expressly pointed out that it was the second record summer in a row.

High temperatures and drought in Europe

Especially in the southwest of the continent, where temperatures were already high in June and July, they were significantly higher in August than in the reference period from 1991 to 2020. But they were also mostly above average in the east.

In addition, August this year was generally much drier than average in western Europe and parts of the east.

More precipitation than usual in Greece

On the other hand, there was more precipitation than usual in the south-east of the continent, Greece and Turkey and large parts of Scandinavia.

Greece often struggles with drought and forest fires in the months of July and August.

In August 2022 it was different.

There was more water than there had been in years.

The Copernicus records go back to 1979.

The climate change service also uses data from ground stations, balloons, airplanes and satellites going back to 1950.
