A young athlete from the TC Kreuzlinger Forst is breaking new ground in the USA.

Germering – In November 2021, the Germering tennis talent Sophia Jurina told the Fürstenfeldbrucker Tagblatt that she would like to play for a college team in the USA.

She would also like to do something "in the direction of modeling".

Now, around eleven months later, the 18-year-old has achieved both goals – and much more: The Jersey College student walked the catwalk at New York Fashion Week a few weeks ago.

"It all turned out that way," says Sophia Jurina modestly in the Tagblatt interview, in which she is connected via video conference from Jersey City (New Jersey state).

The 18-year-old has been attending New Jersey City University there since September and lives on a campus with several other students in an apartment.

However, she had not actually applied to the college.

"The tennis coach had seen a video of me on YouTube," says Sophia Jurina.

Then he wrote to her that he wanted her on his team.

Other offers came from universities in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and other states.

"I then decided to go to college because it's very close to New York." In the back of her mind, the passionate tennis player still had the idea of starting a modeling career.

Shortly before the start of the semester in the USA, the 18-year-old embarked on her catwalk career.

"I had already applied to several castings in New York from Germering," says Sophia Jurina.

On her own – in other words, without the involvement of an agency – the high school graduate from Germering took part in the castings in the American city.

She usually left the house at 9 a.m. and only returned at around 11 p.m. in the evening.

"I was way too late for a casting, all the designers had already chosen their models," reports Sophia Jurina.

She persistently asked if she shouldn't be allowed to walk after all.

"It's no longer possible," was the answer from the casting organizers.

Once again she asked to introduce herself to the designers.

With success: "I was allowed to present myself at the last minute - and two designers canceled their models and took me," says Sophia Jurina happily.

In addition to modeling, Sophia Jurina continues to swing the tennis racket in the USA.

She wants to be number 1 in her college.

A day later, the 18-year-old walked for two designers at the "Indie Fash New York Fashion Week Show", before the crowning event took place a day later: Sophia Jurina defected for the designer Anthony Rubio at the world-famous New York Fashion Week Show the catwalk, with a dog model on her arm, in front of numerous spectators and camera crews.

She was even allowed on the red carpet after the show.

Family and friends in Germering and the surrounding area cheered on the live stream from afar.

And her roommates from Jersey City also followed the big performance of the 18-year-old.

"One highlight for me was that many people wanted to take selfies with me after the show," says Sophia Jurina enthusiastically.

"It was the perfect start for me in the USA."

Playing tennis does not take a back seat to the 18-year-old, who is still a member of TC Blutenburg in Munich.

In college, she already trains with the team.

"The trainer told me that I could become the new number one," says the student.

According to the current plan, she will come back to Germany at the end of May 2023 when her sports management studies have been completed.

"But I can imagine staying near New York for another year," says Sophia Jurina.

And who knows how model and tennis careers will develop in the coming months.
