A car with an expired license plate has been in Weilheim for months.

The fact that the authorities cannot simply tow the car is met with incomprehension.

Weilheim – The patience of Marcus Reichenberg and his family has been put to the test in recent months.

The Weilheimer, who runs an insurance agency on Kaltenmoserstrasse, vividly describes what has happened since April of this year.

Since then, according to Reichenberg, a silver-colored Audi A6 has been parked on the street right in front of his office around the clock – without a valid license plate.

Someone must have parked the car there and not picked it up.

Audi annoys Weilheim: weeks and months go by, but nothing happens

"The car had a short number plate that expired after a few days," Reichenberg recalls.

"Weeks and months passed, but nothing happened." Finally, he and his family turned on the public order office, because cars without a valid license plate are not allowed to be parked on public land.

"If you park incorrectly for five minutes in Weilheim, you get a ticket right away," says Reichenberg.

“But an unregistered car sits on a public road for months.

This can not be."

The Audi blocked one of the parking spaces on Kaltenmoserstrasse.

That annoys Reichenberg, after all, customers regularly come to his office.

"And they have to park somewhere." There is another office and four rental apartments in the building where Reichenberg runs his agency.

The house belongs to Reichenberg's parents.

And opposite is the technical college.

Parking spaces would be urgently needed there.

The Reichenbergs contacted the regulatory office at ever shorter intervals.

Tenants of the house also asked the authorities.

Why isn't the vehicle towed?

Over the months, the Audi became increasingly neglected.

Someone tipped dirt onto the station wagon's roof, damaging a tire and taillight.

According to Reichenberg, the vehicle looked "like a pig".

German bureaucracy: The car can only be towed after a deadline

The head of the public order office, Walter Weber, explains when asked: "First of all, it must be stated that this is not a parking violation, but an unauthorized special use."

Vehicles parked unannounced on public property, on the other hand, violate the Bavarian Roads and Roads Act.

"The argument that you get a ticket if you park wrong doesn't apply here," says Weber.

After all, these are two different legal regulations.

According to Weber, vehicles may only be towed away immediately if there is imminent danger.

"For example, if a vehicle is parked in a fire brigade approach zone." But that was not the case with the Audi on Kaltenmoserstrasse.

Before the vehicle is removed, the owner of the vehicle must be consulted.

"For a long time it wasn't within reach," says Weber.

Although the last owner of the vehicle was able to be determined, he stated that he had already sold the Audi.

Only when the current owner could be found was it possible to set a timely deadline.

If this expires, the car will be towed by the city.

Eddy about illegal parking: The Audi A6 was already known to the authorities

The car is not unknown to the authorities.

The public order office had had the Audi removed from another location in the city some time ago.

The city must pay in advance for the costs of the towing service and storage of the vehicle.

The "condition disruptor", i.e. the owner, only gets his car back when he has paid the outstanding amounts and the fine, explains Weber.

And the owner was different last time than today.

"It was like a detective game," says Weber.

Ultimately, the authority's deadline had an effect: the car was picked up at the beginning of the week, and yesterday the road sweeper swept through the street.

Dirt had accumulated around the car.

The owner now expects a fine - according to Weber in the three-digit range.
