Opinion Wanted: Leumi explainer on the reform | Israel today

2023-02-21T21:37:43.618Z

Even if Netanyahu could speak freely about the reform, it is doubtful whether he alone would be able to stand up to the broad campaign of the opponents of the reform, who have already established their claims

Despite the lively and creative discourse in the public regarding the legal reform, and even though its opponents market it to the world as the destruction of Israeli democracy and the erasure of the liberal character of the state, the Israeli government behaves with indifference, dreaminess and as if it were a demon.

Mostly, it doesn't bother trying to make counter moves on the world stage.

The result is that the international media is fed mainly by information coming from the opponents of the reform, who, according to their arguments, do not seem to know and understand its nature and effects at all.

At the same time, the opposition and opponents of the reform also managed to gather support from many Jewish organizations in the US and the West.

In their fight against the reform, its opponents cooperate in practice with the campaign to boycott the State of Israel, and strengthen it.

Among the progressive camp in the US and the West, Israel is seen anyway as a cruel, occupying country that does not respect human rights. The activity of the opponents of the reform only fuels the campaign of hatred against Israel, and gives its members more excuses to continue fighting it, when even within Israel there are claims that it is not democratic.

Faced with this dangerous reality, the Israeli government freezes its guard.

Although Prime Minister Netanyahu is interviewed from time to time by American media, he does not go into detail or refer to the depth of the matter, due to the conflict of interests established for him by the legal advisor to the government.

On top of that, even if Netanyahu could speak freely about the reform, it is doubtful whether he alone would be able to stand up to the broad campaign of its opponents, who have already managed to establish their claims well.

The hasty establishment of the Ministry of Information does not contribute much either.

Not so much when it comes to an office without any powers, budgets or personnel.

On the other hand, the government has at its disposal a valuable and meaningful tool that can be used at the media, diplomatic and political level - the national information system.

Even if there is a problem with government employees siding with the legal reform or opposing it, there is still a need and importance to explain to the world that the debates in Israel are conducted in a transparent and open manner - and precisely in this there is evidence that the State of Israel is a vibrant and living democracy.

It is important to present the details of the legal reform to the world factually, and to explain the rationale behind the government's intention.

A national commentator is needed who will brief international media, lead a public diplomacy campaign alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, unite all government ministries under him at the spokesperson and informational level, and in fact carry out a public blitz against the dangerous discourse that paints the State of Israel in a negative and anti-democratic light.

As of today, Prime Minister Netanyahu has not yet appointed a head of the information system to lead this effort. In the past, Netanyahu delayed a lot with the appointment of the head of the information system in the various governments he led, but in the current situation, the government and the country do not have the luxury of waiting as in the past. The government must appoint a head of the information system as soon as possible Leumi, which will carry out countermeasures to the demonization attempts against the State of Israel.
