Glowe - On Easter Sunday (9 April) there was a fire in a gazebo on the island of Rügen, in the town of Glowe.

A 62-year-old man could only be found dead under the rubble, as the police headquarters in Neubrandenburg (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) said in a report.

The man's dog was also found lifeless in the burned-out arbor.

His 13-year-old grandson escaped the flames with minor injuries.

On Easter Sunday at 6:27 a.m., a fire was reported in a gazebo on the island of Rügen in the holiday resort of Glowe.

At the time of the fire, a 13-year-old boy was sleeping in the gazebo with his grandfather and a dog.

The boy escaped with minor injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

However, his grandfather did not make it out of the burning arbor and was found dead in the burned-out building.

His dog was also found dead under the rubble.

The emergency services initially assumed that the building was empty, as the Sagard volunteer fire department wrote on Facebook.

When the fire brigade arrived at the garden, they found that the gazebo was inhabited.

The cause of the fire is still unclear.

The criminal service of the KK Stralsund and a fire investigator were deployed.

According to initial findings, the fire broke out in the kitchen.

The property damage is currently estimated at around 20,000 euros.

On the night of Easter Sunday, emergency services were also called to a fire in Grossenkneten.

A car was set on fire in an Edeka parking lot.
