The reception of the mayor of Geretsried, Michael Müller, was special. The motto of the evening in the council chambers was "Heroes of Childhood".

Geretsried – Mayor Michael Müller would have liked to open the garden soiree outside in early summer temperatures. But it rained on Wednesday evening – almost as always at the annual reception of the city of Geretsried. About 250 invited guests crowded into the council chamber, among them the pastors Andreas Vogelmeier, Dr. Theo Heckel and Apostolos Malamoussis, Eurasburg's mayor Moritz Sappl, representatives of authorities, banks, clubs, associations and working groups as well as day-care center and retirement home managers.

The last time the city organised an event of this magnitude was in January 2019 – the prelude to the anniversary year (70 years of the founding of the municipality, 50 years of the city's elevation). The news of a pandemic caused by the coronavirus had already leaked out, Müller looked back in his speech. What followed is well known. "After more than three years, we are here now," said the host. "I'm very happy about that."

A lot achieved despite the pandemic

In the past three years, Geretsried has achieved a lot despite the pandemic, Müller said. He cited positive developments in the city administration (keyword: home office) and in brick-and-mortar retail. Corona has accelerated structural change enormously. But financial slumps would not be so severe in smaller cities. "Brick-and-mortar retail will continue to play a role, even as it becomes more digital." In the future, according to the mayor, inner cities will fulfill the function of local supply even more. Geretsried is leading the way: As reported, the discounter Aldi moved its branch from Banater Straße to Neue Mitte. Müller: "The food trade will be the backbone for a flourishing retail sector."

The head of the town hall is optimistic about the future. Only with confidence can one look ahead. "Children still have this confidence," Müller introduced to the motto of the reception "Heroes of childhood": cartoon star Minnie Mouse, super agent James Bond, film icon Marilyn Monroe, Indian chief Winnetou, the characters Miss Piggy and Kermit from the Muppet Show. They also stood in the council chambers in the form of large cardboard figures. "We want to take the heroes of our childhood as role models, but also express that we look to the future with confidence," Müller explained the motto of the event. "We also want to carry this confidence into our political work," said the head of the town hall.

Crab cocktail, Hawaiian toast and Budweiser beer

With music, show interludes and entertaining conversations, the guests enjoyed food and drinks: For example, martini, crab cocktail and Hawaiian toast were available at the booth of James Bond and Marilyn Monroe. The strongmen Bud Spencer and Terence Hill served spare ribs, chili and Budweiser beer – served by costumed service staff. Minnie Mouse distributed fruit slices, lollipops, scoop ice cream, eggnog and Irish coffee.

At 21:15 p.m., Mayor Müller picked up the microphone again. The cardboard figures were raffled off – anyone who wanted to could write their own personal hero on a participation sheet at the beginning of the reception. Peter Curtius, spokesman for the Green Party in the city council, was pleased to welcome Kermit the frog. TuS boss Mirko Naumann now has two women at home: his own and actress Marilyn Monroe.
