Jorge Rial was operated on: he was implanted with a cardiodefibrillator

Jorge Rial underwent surgery at the Finochietto sanatorium. There they implanted a cardiodefibrillator to prevent a heart attack like the one he suffered two weeks ago in Colombia.

"They already put it on me. It was planned and everything went perfectly. I'm already in my room," the journalist told Clarín after undergoing a brief intervention.

In addition, Rial said that he will remain hospitalized until Thursday "for control" and was happy with the result of the operation.

As explained on the official website of the Cardiovascular Institute of Buenos Aires (ICBA), the cardiodefibrillator that was implanted in Jorge Rial "is a device that permanently controls if heart rhythm alterations occur, especially malignant tachycardias."

The device, as soon as it detects any strange variation, "treats them automatically by means of stimuli or electric shocks" because the device is connected "to the heart by means of a cable".

In addition, the ICBA requires the cardiodefibrillator "is usually implanted in the chest as a pacemaker, under the skin, and the wire is introduced through a vein that passes through that area."

"The operation is done under local anesthesia, antibiotics are usually administered to prevent infections," he says. And he clarifies: "Once implanted, the patient falls asleep briefly under general anesthesia and causes a malignant tachycardia to verify that the device detects and treats it automatically, and thus guarantee its subsequent operation."

After returning to Argentina on a medical flight, Jorge Rial visited his colleagues from Radio 10 and told in first person how was the heart attack he suffered in Bogotá, where he had traveled to vacation with María del Mar Ramón, his new girlfriend.

"I went through a situation that I'm still trying to rebuild. An extreme situation that nobody thinks is going to happen and that touched me and absolutely pierced my body first and then my head, my head broke it into a thousand pieces. No one is prepared to die. And that's literally what happened to me," the journalist said.

He added: "In my medical sheet, which they had me read later, it says sudden death. I was about ten minutes (dead). They spent ten minutes trying to revive me, gave me three electric shocks and literally shit me with sticks. My rib cage actually hurts a lot."

In addition, punctually about the cardiac episode he had, he said that he woke up "with a very sharp chest pain at 8 thirty in the morning" and at half an hour he decided to "call the medical coverage and quickly go to the sanatorium."

"They attended me, they took me quickly to do some first analyzes that incredibly the electrocardiogram gave well. But within 20 minutes a doctor came. He looks at me and says 'I have bad news: he is going through a heart attack, we are going to have to do a stent,'" he said.

"They are doing the electro, as a routine, and there I went. There they tell me that my eyes went back and I started to drown, and then I don't remember anything," he concluded.
