Two sheep, found dead in the Berchtesgadener Land, were not torn by a wolf after all. Studies confirm DNA of a brown bear.
Berchtesgaden/Augsburg – Two weeks ago, two sheep were found dead in the Berchtesgaden region. The first findings, according to which a wolf would have torn the animals, have now been refuted. As the State Office for the Environment announced on Tuesday in Augsburg, DNA traces of a brown bear were detected.
The two dead sheep were found on May 15. Initially, there was a suspicion of a wolf crack, which is why experts from the state office examined the site and the carcasses. In the end, the DNA sample brought certainty that the culprit was a bear.
Early May: Several bear sightings in the border area between Bavaria and Austria
Before a brown bear was hit and killed by a train on a railway line near Schwarzach in the Austrian province of Salzburg at the beginning of last week, there had already been several bear sightings in the border area between Bavaria and Austria, most recently in Großgmain and Grödig.
"In an exchange with the Natural History Museum in Vienna, it is currently being clarified whether it is the bear run over by a train in Salzburger Land on May 23, 2023." In the neighboring Bavarian districts of Berchtesgadener Land and Traunstein, there had also been several bear detections at the beginning of May. Current indications of a brown bear in Upper Bavaria are not available to the state office. (CEI/dpa)
