Following a report in Israel Hayom about the cancellation of the appointments of hundreds of neighborhood rabbis and part of Matan Kahane's kashrut reform, the Constitution Committee approved today (Wednesday) the cancellation of phase one of the kashrut reform.

As part of the Law for the Appointment of Urban Rabbis and Town Rabbis, which is intended to strengthen the kashrut status of the local rabbi, a clause was inserted that effectively stops Phase A of the kashrut reform that allowed the city rabbi to grant a kosher certificate outside his city limits. With the new law coming into effect, businesses will not be able to receive rabbinic certification outside the limits.

Tomer Ben-Zvi of the Fitness Organization, who participated in the discussion, noted that: "This is a small clause that is great news for the kosher world." Ben-Zvi added to the committee: The use of the kashrut reform was not carried out by most rabbinates. In practice, it was used for deals to places where supervision was removed due to kosher deficiencies to find kashrut from another rabbinate."
He added: "This is a great reinforcement of the kashrut system and stopping the possibility of trading in kosher procedures by business owners caught violating the kosher procedures."
