However we look at it, the goal of the people, the government and the IDF is the elimination of Hamas in the military and governmental dimensions. The issue of the abductees, both with all the involvement of the cynical strategists and with Hamas' psychological warfare, is a high priority, of course, but not above the purpose of the war as decided by the government.

This does not mean that Israel can conduct the campaign in Gaza while ignoring the hostages. It's a challenge that no one, except for a few newspapers, a few TV channels and a few demonstrators, knows exactly how to solve it. How do you lead an all-out war and still combine the military achievements with the release of the hostages?
Over the weekend, there were reports from both Iranian-subordinate media and others that a deal to release most of the hostages was underway and could be realized quickly. Hamas corresponds in its propaganda with both the families of the abductees in Israel and with the Biden administration, which would like to stop Israel in its military activity. The very buzz coming out of Hamas proves that the IDF's military activity in recent days – and especially since Friday evening – is very effective.

As noted by Maj. Gen. (res.) Gershon Hacohen, any development of a combined air and naval ground operation creates additional options. Each push forward creates targets and operational intelligence, and expands the ability to deepen military action.
But the military operation on the ground also creates political pressure – first and foremost on Hamas. The same reports of a hostage deal can turn from just propaganda aimed at dividing the Israeli public into something real. Over the weekend, Israel's situation vis-à-vis the United States also improved greatly. The very election of the Republican speaker of Congress reduces the maneuverability and withdrawal of Biden, Blinken and their people from their support for Israel.
In addition to the Republicans coming to their senses (a majority in the House of Representatives), American public opinion is very strong behind Israel. Some commentators say it's 65% of the public. One poll found 74% support. One veteran pollster said he could not recall any war in which the American public's support for Israel was so broad and solid. You don't have to be impressed by the ugly demonstrations on campuses or in New York and other urban centers.

Yesterday, a position was expressed on the Palestinian side of releasing all civilian abductees in exchange for fuel and water, plus a significant reduction in military activity for some time. It's hard to understand what their interest is. After all, as soon as the abductees are released, the IDF's activity will return in full force. In any case, military activity inside the Gaza Strip increases the self-confidence of the IDF and the political leadership. This could lead to more acceptable solutions regarding abductees as well.
The mode of release of abductees can be compared to the appearance of a very dark cloud. This cloud can bring rain, it can also pass with the wind.
