American commandos arrived in Israel to help plan the operation to free more than 200 Israeli hostages held captive by Hamas, according to a report published Tuesday in The New York Times.
According to Christopher Meyer, Assistant Secretary of Defense, the United States actively assists Israel in various military matters, chief among them "the identification of hostages, including Americans. That's our responsibility."
Mayer declined to elaborate on the number of American commandos in Israel, but other sources in the report admitted that they were dozens of soldiers, joining other commandos who arrived immediately after the outbreak of Hamas' terrorist attack. In addition to the soldiers, the State Department, the FBI and other departments in the US administration are working to assist their Israeli counterparts on the issue of abductees held by Hamas.
According to the report, the purpose of the fighters' arrival in Israel is not to take an active part in the hostilities but to advise on planning the IDF's ground operations in the Gaza Strip, and to assist in the evacuation of American citizens from Israel and neighboring countries, along with securing US embassies.
