Starnberg - Christmas without chocolate? Unthinkable. However, cocoa, as the main raw material, is a fruit that is severely threatened by global warming. The Starnberg District Office, which has once again been awarded the Fairtrade label, is currently drawing attention to this connection with an information stand in the main foyer.

The campaign "It's getting too hot for cocoa" combines the Fairtrade idea with climate protection and also led the new One World promoter for the region, Leonie Müller, to visit the district office. Together with Cornelia Kraus, spokesperson for the Fairtrade district steering group, and the climate protection manager and Fairtrade commissioner Josefine Ander, more awareness of fair trade is being promoted, especially now at Christmas time.

Lots of information and chocolate as a reward

Interested visitors can currently find out about the "hot cocoa", fair trade and the 17 sustainability goals of the UN in the main foyer of the district office and are rewarded with small chocolate bars, of course fairtrade-certified. So far, the market share of Fairtrade cocoa on the German market is 17 percent. Convincing more people of fair trade is the goal of the "Sweet Revolution" campaign of Fairtrade Germany. This is because people in cocoa cultivation are already feeling the consequences of climate change and have to convert their agriculture to sustainable methods. Fairtrade provides farmers with comprehensive support for this as well as a fixed minimum price for their cocoa. Once again this year, the district office received the award as a "Fairtrade Town" from the TransFair association, and eight municipalities in the district as well as the city of Starnberg can also call themselves Fairtrade municipalities.

Josefine Anderer joins the Klima3 Energy Agency

With this campaign, climate protection manager Josefine Anderer is saying goodbye to the district office at the end of the year. In the future, she will work entirely in the Klima3 energy agency of the three districts of Starnberg, Fürstenfeldbruck and Landsberg in Türkenfeld. The funding programme as well as the Fairtrade initiative in the district will continue to be supervised by Herbert Schwarz, consultant for the environment, energy and climate protection. (kb)
