A 35-year-old Frenchman was fatally injured on the night of Friday to Saturday 23 December following a brawl in a nightclub in Luxembourg, and a suspect was arrested and imprisoned, the Grand Duchy justice said on Sunday.

The suspect is a 57-year-old security guard who has been charged with "intentional assault and battery resulting in death" as part of the investigation entrusted to an investigating judge, the Luxembourg prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The victim fell "head first"

The incident took place on Saturday at around 03:00 a.m. in a discotheque café in Pétange, in the south-west of Luxembourg, not far from the Belgian and French borders. Following "a confrontation" with this security guard, the victim "fell to the ground, head first, and seriously injured himself". "Despite intensive medical care, the 35-year-old man died shortly afterwards," the prosecutor's office said.

The suspect, who was arrested on Saturday, was brought before the investigating judge who charged him and decided to place him in pre-trial detention at the Sanem Penitentiary Centre. According to the local press, the victim is from Longuyon, in the French department of Meurthe-en-Moselle, and he was celebrating the end of the year holidays with colleagues and friends when the tragedy occurred. The investigation is continuing and the judicial police are still looking for any useful information on the circumstances of the fight, the Luxembourg prosecutor's office said.
