Parts of a historic sandstone wall in the old town of Wertheim in Baden-Württemberg collapsed. A section of about ten meters long and up to eight meters high was affected, said a police spokesman. Dogs were looking for people in the rubble. However, one does not assume that there are victims.
A house in the immediate vicinity of the wall was cleared, three people had to leave the building. They were not injured. The reasons for the collapse of the wall are unclear. Heavy rains may have played a role recently, the spokesman said.

Collapsed city wall: does rain matter?
The scene of the accident near the entrance to an underground car park and a footpath to Wertheim Castle was cordoned off, according to the police.
According to the city, the Wertheim Castle was built in the 12th century and expanded over many years. It towers over the city center on a mountain - this borders the old town with the wall fortifications now affected. A city spokeswoman was initially unable to provide any information about the exact age of the historic wall.
