Police officers in the northern United States are said to have forced a Muslim woman to take off her headgear for a photo - because of a traffic offense. The woman sued the authorities and was successful.

A believing woman has been brought to trial in the state of Minesota because police officers are said to have forced her to take her hijab in prison because of a traffic offense for a photo. Now the Muslims are to receive 120,000 euros to settle the legal dispute.

A judge has confirmed this agreement, the woman and her lawyer have now announced. Dealing with her in a prison in August 2013 was "one of the most humiliating and painful experiences" of her life, said the 57-year-old. "I didn't want any other Muslim woman to go through this."

No official admission of guilt

The woman was arrested by court order after she did not appear for a traffic offense hearing. According to a report by the Star Tribune, she was unable to make the appointment because she had to drive her daughter to the hospital.

With the current decision, the competent court has also established rules on how people with religious clothing should be treated in police custody. The district the woman had sued has also agreed to completely delete the recordings in question. An official admission of guilt does not go hand in hand with the current decision.

The plaintiff had accused the authorities of violating her constitutional rights in August 2013 and discriminating against her on the basis of her religious beliefs. The 57-year-old, born and raised in the US state of Ohio, has lived in Minnesota since 2005.
