The island state of Papua New Guinea is one of the most inaccessible places in the world. Much of the population lives in the impassable and remote highlands and the rainforests in the eastern part of the island.
For centuries, the densely forested highlands were considered uninhabited. It was only around 80 years ago that there was first contact between individual tribal members and the outside world. Even today, most people still live in traditional tribal villages and communities.
