At least two migrants were killed when crossing the Danube from Serbia to Croatia. Together with other passengers, they were on a boat that capsized on the river early Monday morning, according to the Serbian Ministry of the Interior.
The Reuters news agency had previously reported six missing people, including two children. Rescue workers were said to be looking for possible further victims. The nationality of the dead is still unclear.
As the Serbian public television broadcaster RTS reported, about a dozen people were on the boat when it overturned in heavy rain. The remaining passengers were able to save themselves back on the Serbian shore.
For many migrants, Serbia is a transit point on the way to the European Union. From there, many try to reach the EU member state Croatia and then further Western Europe. Thousands of migrants are stuck in the Balkans.
