Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Mini) won the fifth stage of the Dakar-2020 held between Al Ula and Ave in Saudi Arabia, thus consolidating his position as leader in the general classification.
Sainz, who had already won the third special on Tuesday, completed the 353 km in 2 minutes and 56 seconds ahead of Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyha (Toyota).
After yesterday's victory, Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini) took third place and reached the finish line with 6 minutes and 11 seconds behind the winner of the day.
In general, the 57-year-old Spaniard, double winner of the event (2009 and 2018), has almost six minutes ahead of Al-Attiyha and 18 minutes ahead of "Peter".
The Australian Toby Price (KTM) won the fifth stage of the Dakar-2020 in the motorbike category, 563 kilometers of which 353 specials between Al Ula and Grandine in Saudi Arabia. The reigning champion, already winner of the inaugural stage, arrived at the finish with 1 minute and 12 seconds ahead of Pablo Quintanilla and 2 minutes and 31 seconds on Andrew Short, both Husqvarna drivers. In the overall standings, the American Ricky Brabec (Honda), who finished the stage in fourth position, kept the lead, ahead of Price who took 9 minutes. British Sam Sunderland, winner in 2017 and sixth overall at the start of the stage, had to retire after a bad crash in the middle of the special. Tomorrow, the Dakar leaves Hail to head for Ryad where a day off will be observed.
