First ablation surgery of atrial fibrillation with the use of hypnosis for analgesic purposes. It was performed in the electrophysiology room of the San Paolo Hospital of Savona by Luca Bacino, who introduced the use of hypnosis in clinical practice in Savona thanks to the collaboration with the Arrhythmology Center of the Cardinal Massaia Hospital in Asti and after having attended the Italian school of hypnosis Ciics in Turin.

The ablation intervention of atrial fibrillation requires procedural times that can exceed even three hours and a local and systemic pharmacological polytherapy for analgesic and anesthetic purposes is generally necessary to be able to withstand the intervention. "Thanks to hypnosis during surgery it is possible to drastically reduce the use of anesthetic and analgesic drugs and make the procedure even more tolerated - underlines Bacino - Clinical hypnosis is still little known and little applied in the medical field and in especially during cardiological interventional procedures for analgesic purposes, but its potential is extraordinary, as it can minimize the use of conventional drugs and moreover the procedure is made much more tolerable ".

"Hypnosis in electrophysiology - says Bacino - is undoubtedly a novelty at the international level and its increasingly extensive use will drastically improve the daily work of the interventional cardiologist". The ablation of atrial fibrillation is an avant-garde intervention in the field of interventional cardiology that allows to treat episodes of arrhythmia and consists in carrying out, through cardiac catheterization starting from the femoral veins, the electrical disconnection of the pulmonary veins inside the left atrium of the heart through the use of radio frequency energy resulting in a stable modification of the electrical characteristics of the heart.
