The pilot fell during the seventh stage from Riyadh to Wadi al Dawasir at the height of km 276. Goncalves was transported by helicopter to Layla hospital, but the injuries were too serious and the doctors could not but report his death. The Portuguese in 2015 had come in second place in the Dakar, but above all he was in his thirteenth participation in the great race. The last fatal accident occurred in 2015, the 39-year-old Polish driver Michal Hernik, who fell victim to the third stage in Argentina, was also a motorcyclist.
