In Portugal, the ruling Socialist Party has proposed taxing European pensioners who will settle in the country from this year up to 10%. The proposal is contained in an amendment to the 2020 budget. At the height of the financial crisis in 2009, Lisbon had exempted Europeans from paying taxes for 10 years on condition that they lived in Portugal for six months of the year.
