Company: 'We lose 20 million euros per year'. Trade unions: 'It's a social bomb' (ANSA)

On October 31 Whirlpool will leave Naples. For the 450 workers of the Neapolitan site, the cold shower arrives while the table between the Government and the company is underway at the Ministry of Economic Development, chaired by Minister Stefano Patuanelli. The American washing machine giant notes that the Naples plant loses 20 million euros a year. "The market data are emblematic", underlines Whirlpool Italia's managing director, Luigi La Morgia, during the meeting at the Mise, explaining that in Naples "there is no longer economic sustainability of the production of washing machines" but that the Italy remains strategic for the group, with 5 thousand employees across the country. The difficulties would only concern the factory in Campania where the company claims to have been aware of the problems since 2018, but claims to have tried to revive production. The 17 million euros foreseen for the Whirlpool Napoli site will be redistributed on the other plants, announces La Morgia. In light of these latest developments, Invitalia has already started looking for a new entity to take over the American multinational on behalf of the government. The goal is to arrive at the final selection of a possible investor for July 2020.
And the unions warn that the story can become a real social bomb for Naples and for the whole country. "From this moment union relations with the company are broken. If the government does not take a strong position, the Whirlpool affair becomes a matter of public order," said Fiom-CGIL Napoli secretary general Rosario Rappa.
