Parents urge the municipality to abandon plastic trays in favor of stainless steel, in the name of children's health.

In Nantes, parents have been mobilizing for several months to ban the use of plastic in school canteens in the city. The collective Canteens without plastic 44 points in particular to the plastic trays which are used to heat the food served at the table for children.

The note from the tray manufacturer is clear: they should not be reheated to more than 130 degrees. Problem: some reheating ovens have only two heating positions, the lowest being 140 degrees. Ten degrees of deviation that frightens some parents: "There is no temperature control, how do you know that the ovens do not go up to a level that could degrade the plastic?" "Worries Karen Belléguic.

"Not a whim of sore parents"

The collective therefore calls on the town hall to change these ovens but also, more generally, to definitively reject the use of plastic to switch to the stainless steel tank. “We have to move faster, judge Karen Belléguic, it is not a fad of bohemian parents, we are talking about the health of our children. "

"Getting out of plastic, for me, it's obvious, the question is how," reacts Catherine Choquet, elected EELV in charge of the issue at the town hall of Nantes. For her, there is no risk to the health of children since the dishes are not heated above 65 degrees. “During the school year, we changed the dishes, the glasses and the pitchers. The second thing to do is the trays, we are replacing them with stainless steel when possible and testing alternatives ”.
