Recently dramatic scenes took place in "Bares for Rares" on ZDF: An elderly couple wanted to sell an alleged heirloom - and experienced a nasty surprise.
The couple from Voerde certainly hadn't expected this when they walked into the Pulheim rolling mill in a good mood: when they arrived, Ulrich Grundmann and his wife were greeted by moderator Horst Lichter and art expert Wendela Horz. The older couple also had an unwanted heirloom with their aunt in their luggage.
In doing so, she had bought the ring as an investment during her lifetime. And moderator Horst Lichter was initially impressed by the "Klunker". Encouraged by this, the couple from Voerde hoped for 6,000 euros for the good piece. But the art expert quickly taught it otherwise.

On closer inspection, she finally noticed that the faceted edges were already showing signs of wear and were also birefringent . Explanation: Diamonds are usually extremely hard and not easy to break. That means: This was just a boring costume jewelry. " You can get such a zirconia for just 10.20 euros, " says Wendela Horz. The expert's multitester finally confirmed her guess. "So it's worth nothing?" Replied Ulrich Grundmann in shock. "Now I'm flat," said Horst Lichter in surprise.

But the couple was (a little) lucky in misfortune: at least the ring of the ring was made of 585 gold . So the expertise finally showed that the damaged fashion clunker was worth around 100 to 120 euros. For comparison: A diamond ring in this size would have brought in a whopping 100,000 euros !

Still, the couple tried their luck in the dealer's room - maybe the dealers wouldn't notice the difference? And indeed, Fabian Kahl seemed to fall for it: "This is a diamond, I suppose," he said. "That is not one," knew his colleague Wolfgang Pauritsch. "She definitely bought it as real and was fooled," Ludwig Hofmaier recognized. Finally, dealer Pauritsch offered the couple the estimated price of 120 euros - "for the ring version", he explained.
But suddenly the other dealers got on the table - in the end Markus Wildhagen was awarded the contract. He gave the couple 180 euros for the fashion clunker - the couple accepted, albeit gritting their teeth.
