  • Ritter Sport invites customers to test it on Twitter

Waldenbuch - The chocolate giant has now presented the prototype Ritter Sport “on paper” on Twitter . However, future use of paper packaging seems far from certain at the moment. The group openly admits that the changeover to paper is difficult: “Even our 'in paper' prototype cannot protect against melting and grease stains can occur. We now want to face this challenge so that the packaging stays securely tight, ” Ritter Sport describes the problems with the lofty goal of more sustainable packaging.

Ritter Sport: Normal paper is not suitable for packaging

In any case, the fans are very positive on Twitter: “Grandiose! After own cocoa plantations for sustainable cultivation, the packaging now comes without plastic! I would really like to test it, ”says a user enthusiastically.

On its website, Ritter Sport announces why paper packaging is now being tested: it is much easier to dispose of. In addition, many more countries would have an organized recycling system for paper than for the polypropylene used in the current products. From an environmental perspective, paper is definitely the better solution, but it is not unconditionally suitable for chocolate.

Ritter Sport: There is no perfect paper yet

The problem here is with product protection. Paper does not offer a barrier against fat. While other products such as rice or pasta can be easily packed in paper, chocolate with its relatively high fat content is not so easy.

Over time, grease stains could appear on the packaging or the chocolate could even smell the environment. The perfect paper that protects chocolate from environmental influences does not yet exist. Ritter Sport therefore relied on the help of customers to develop a new material.

Aldi and Edeka are also currently experimenting with new, sustainable packaging.
