The Oscars publish predictions for the prize list before deleting them

2020-02-06T17:34:38.879Z

On social networks, the institution has unveiled and then erased forecasts which give winner Parasite, 1917 or Joaquin Phoenix at the 92nd Academy Awards. Enough to feed some conspiracy theories.

Error, precipitation, premeditation? While the 92nd Academy Awards will take place Sunday evening at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, the official website of the American Academy of Cinema offers internet users to vote for their favorites at the Oscars and share their choices on social media. A very well-followed process since the Academy of Oscars also published a post on its Twitter and Instagram accounts entitled “My predictions on the Oscars” on Monday, February 3, of which you can see the screenshot below.

This statute, which lists the laureates in the 24 contending categories, indicates in particular that Parasite would be Oscar for best film, Sam Mendes best director and Joaquin Phoenix crowned best actor. It created a real storm. What does this published ranking mean that does not take very risky bets? The Academy's forecasts? Her preferences?

Risk of influencing votes

Inadmissible for many moviegoers and certain lobbyists who mount the campaigns of the films in the running. They saw in this table an attempt to influence the votes. In fact, the 8,469 film professionals who have the right to fill out a bulletin had 24 hours, until February 4, to send their choices to the Academy.

Faced with rising controversy, the Academy quickly withdrew the publication. The institution said that a " problem " on Twitter led to believe that some of the votes came from their account. " They are not. This error has been resolved, ”specifies the official account of the Academy.

We invited fans on Twitter to share their predictions at #Oscars. You have made a ton. A brief concern on Twitter gave the impression that some of your votes came from our account. This was not the case. This error is now resolved. And we will reveal our choices on Sunday, ”said a word of apology.

If by chance, the Academy’s predictions coincided perfectly with Sunday’s prize list, the Oscars could find themselves at the heart of an immense controversy, worthy of the “envelope gate”: in 2017, La La Land had been named best movie by mistake, in place of Moonlight .
