(ANSA) - STRASBOURG, FEBRUARY 10 - "On the occasion of the memorial day that we commemorate today, I would like to honor the memory of the Italian victims of all the massacres of the sinkholes and the exodus of the Istrians and Dalmatians during and after the Second World War". Vice-President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness said this at the opening of the plenary session in Strasbourg. "The defense of democracy and tolerance and our commitment to European values are the best tribute to the victims of these tragedies," added McGuinness. "The transition from blockades of power opposed to union is based on peace of mind and shows how important it is to work together for a Europache that puts the values and respect of all citizens at the center", continued the vice president who then asked the classroom to observe a minute of silence. Vice-President McGuinness is replacing the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli at the opening of the EP Plenary.
