Berlinale sells bear skin

The seventieth edition opens tomorrow with new management and Jeremy Irons as president of the jury.


With its concrete cubes and steel beams, the Berlin district of Potsdamerplatz will benefit from additional entertainment during the ten days of its film festival. But it is the entire German capital, both austere and vibrant, with twenty rooms selected for the event which will marry, from Thursday until March 1, the rhythm of the competition. Berlin and its golden bears are not Venice or Cannes.

Rather black films, rare comedies, several documentaries, a political touch and an economy of stars: these are the ingredients of the 70th edition, now led by a couple of discreet professionals in place of a media and controversial character, Dieter Kosslick, whose longevity after eighteen years of reign over the Berlinale, was beginning to raise questions.
