Cherry angiomas, ruby spots or eruptive blood sponges - these terms stand for a phenomenon that many will know. If small blood-red spots suddenly appear on the skin, this raises questions. But the sublime blood vessel growth is widespread - and harmless.
Blood sponges appear suddenly - especially on the upper body
Vascular dilations under the skin - so-called vascular loops - cause the mini-skin change, which doctors call tardive or eruptive blood sponges (hemangiomas) or cherry angiomas . Typical for the small red dots:
- They show up as sharply delineated, slightly raised, cherry-red dots.
- They can grow over time if blood collects in the vascular loops.
- The nodules normally have a diameter of around four millimeters.
- In the final stage, however, ruby spots can grow up to one centimeter in size and take on a dark red color.

Since the frequency of harmless skin changes increases with age, doctors also speak of old blood sponges (senile hemangiomas).
