This organization, founded in 2019 in Barcelona, proposes to use the hashtag #FuckGenderRoles (“to give them gender roles”) on Instagram and on Twitter for the next five weeks. “We want to show the social control that gender stereotypes exert on people. The invisible barriers that hinder gender parity, ”explains one of the entity's founders, Thais Ruiz de Alda, to Verne .

The campaign was presented on Thursday, February 27 at the La Canibal bookstore in Barcelona. To initiate this project, a debate on gender stereotypes was held with the presence of Patricia LujĂĄn, from the School of Feminism platform; Marta Delatte, from Lichen Data Lab; Andrea Saatchi, of the FemDevs association, a representative of Project Una and Thais Ruiz de Alda, of DigitalFems, as moderator.

The importance of raising awareness about this in networks and the right way to do it was discussed. The organizers also published a series of examples that show some data on inequality and sexism, to serve as inspiration: “Unemployment is 11% higher among women than men” or “in the global political sphere only the 21% of the ministries are run by women, ”for example.

Some of the examples created by the contest organization.

Ruiz de Alda does not fear that the campaign can be interpreted as a banalization of machismo: “Today the easiest narrative unit to communicate is a meme. It all depends on the message that is released. So that it is not frivolized, we have marked a very clear line and backed by data that show that gender inequality exists. ”

The contest organization explains that if they manage to reach 300 entries they will have fulfilled their objective. He also plans to find a way to make a traveling exhibition with the images. Since the presentation of the campaign, more than a hundred tweets have been published with the label, according to the Digimind analysis tool, but so far most of them are echoing the contest. Although it has only been underway for a week, the University of Almeria has already contacted the organization to collaborate and use the designs that come out in its March 8 campaign.

The contest ends on April 2. There will be three winners per draw that will take three packs. The prizes are a year of subscription to the Pikara magazine, a bonus of 30 euros in the CanĂbal bookstore and the book Pechos Outside, by Patricia LujĂĄn. You can check all the contest rules here. And then, some of the first memes that are already participating in the contest, followed by others proposed by the organization.
