A ten-month-old baby died from the pulmonary obstruction he suffered after aspirating the fruit of a ligustrine. Little Ciro Matteo fought for his life for five days at the Pediatric Hospital of Posadas and died despite the fact that doctors had managed to extract part of the small fruit through an endoscopic intervention.
Last Sunday in the afternoon, Mateo played with his older brothers in the courtyard of his house in the Santa Lucia neighborhood, in the capital of Misiones. The afternoon passed calmly until the youngest of the brothers took fruit from a ligustro plant to their mouths. The signs of drowning were immediate .
The small object was lodged in one of Ciro's lungs and his parents began resuscitation tasks, without success.
He was urgently taken to a Primary Health Care Center, as it was the closest place. The doctor who was on duty, Enzo Del Prado, warned that the situation was critical and requested an ambulance for the referral. Meanwhile, he performed the small resuscitation tasks .
As soon as the boy was admitted to the Pediatric Hospital, he suffered his first cardiac arrest , but the doctors managed to remove him and referred him to the intensive care sector.
Doctors established that the baby had suffered a "suffocation with complete obstruction due to foreign body aspiration." On Tuesday, through an endoscopic intervention, some of the fruit that prevented the baby from breathing had been removed, but that intervention would not be enough.
“I always entered the feis (sic) to laugh at memes. Today I don't care about memes, I want to ask all my friends of feis if they can pray for this little angel, for my Matteo [who] is fighting for his life and needs a lot of faith. And if you can help us have more people ask and put them in their prayers to come back to us, I would be very grateful. Only God can bring him with us, ”his dad, Adrián Villalba, wrote on Facebook, when doctors told him that only a miracle could save his son's life.
The couple and their relatives never lost hope. They bet on the access to the Hospital waiting for that miracle that would never happen. Yesterday, at 16.35, the pediatricians announced the child's brain death and two hours later his death.
