"Bares for Rares" recently had something very special for sale: boxing gloves by Muhammad Ali. The dealers literally fought for this rarity.

  • A seller hoped to be able to exchange his rare boxing gloves for good money at "Bares for Rares ".
  • They come from boxing legend Muhammad Ali .
  • Although the dealers were enthusiastic, there was a catch.

Usually, owners of rarities at "Bares for Rares" mainly try to sell jewelry, coins or other antiques. On March 9, Detlef Engels brought a somewhat more unusual rarity with him: boxing gloves from Muhammad Ali . However, Horst Lichter noticed in the first seconds that something was wrong.

Boxing gloves from Muhammad Ali at "Bares for Rares": Horst Lichter points out problem

Engels received the gloves for his birthday almost 30 years ago. A friend is said to have bought it from a dealer in Las Vegas. According to his information, Muhammad Ali worked with it for two years before it was finally for sale.

Horst Lichter * was, however, suspicious and there is a good reason for it: Engels could not show a document that substantiates his statements. It is therefore not possible to prove whether Muhammad Ali really wore the gloves - which was also confirmed by expert Sven Deutschmanek .

This even assumes that the synthetic leather gloves were never used in a real fight. He justifies this as follows: Muhammad Ali signed several copies as part of a European tour, which is why the gloves are not unique. It is possible that the boxing legend wore it in the context of show fights, but, as already mentioned, this could not be proven.

Nevertheless, Engels hoped for at least 500 euros. He wouldn't sell below that amount. And he was lucky: several retailers were enthusiastic and pushed their offers ever higher. In the end Wolfgang Pauritsch won the race with a fabulous 770 euros and was able to far exceed the seller's desired amount.
