The German population is currently not only plagued by the fear of being infected with the corona virus. The fear that an economic crisis is looming is also on everyone's lips. Consumer checks for Germany? Verdi boss with a proposal to save the economy

Cinemas, theaters, bars, restaurants and many other facilities will close in the coming days or will no longer receive guests. Chancellor Merkel even recommends avoiding social contacts - if that is possible. Several sectors are therefore suffering from the consequences of the corona virus * and it is likely that more and more companies will be affected, the more the pathogen spreads.

In an interview between Handelsblatt and Verdi boss Frank Werneke , the question arose whether stabilizing consumption would make sense. Werneke replied with a clear "yes" and proposed a concrete strategy: "Just as the government once helped the car industry with the scrapping bonus, it must now support retailers with consumer checks ."

Should people really go shopping now?

Consumption * stabilizes the economy. So is it advisable to go shopping now? Werneke strongly advises against this, since the number of infected continues to increase drastically. Purchases should only be made when absolutely necessary . Instead, consumer checks are practical when the risk of contagion drops: "We need a clear political signal that consumption will stabilize when the climax of the crisis is over. Otherwise, the loss in sales that we have now will never be made up for."

However, it is entirely up to the government to decide whether there will actually be money to buy or not. It remains to be seen to what extent Frank Werneke's recommendation will be taken into account.
