Coronavirus: stopping the epidemic is up to us, say doctors

2020-03-16T20:11:08.889Z

The growth of Covid-19 can still be stopped, warn doctors. A message that echoes the announcement of a reduction in our travel

How can we reverse the epidemic of coronavirus, which is increasing at an alarming rate in our country? Doctors no longer want half-solutions in the face of the danger that risks taking everything. "Anyway, the next few weeks are going to be terrible, in France, like what happened in Italy", explains Professor Jean-Daniel Lelièvre, head of the infectiology service at the Mondor hospital, in Créteil (Val -de-Marne).

Because the Covid-19 is already there, and sends very many patients to the hospital, at the risk of saturating the intensive care units. “My service is full, but we have organized ourselves. We will double our welcome. But that will not be enough to absorb a flow of patients if it turns out to be too large, ”he adds. He notes that the epidemic is in an ascending phase, with a consequence on mortality. “We know that more people will die. But we don't know how big this is going to take, ”he says.

To avoid the disaster, he strongly insisted on social isolation measures: “You have to stay at home, except to go shopping. And hardly see anyone. In our family fold, we keep normal relationships. But aperitifs at home is no, the invited neighbors are also not, ”he adds.

Despite their knowledge, the sudden appearance of the Covid-19 is calling out to scientists. “We are always amazed when there is an emergence. It is reminiscent of HIV, which appeared in the second half of the 20th century, and no one had seen it happen. This was partly due to the modification of large cities in Africa which accelerated its spread. Similarly, it is likely that the spread of Covid-19 is linked to environmental change in China, since it passed successively from the bat, to the pangolin, then to humans, before spreading to the earth. whole, "he adds. And even if it is less contagious than measles, this newcomer proves to be more dangerous than her, because there is no vaccine.

The Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon, also calls for a burst of good citizenship. "When I say massively reducing contacts, it means going from 50 or 100 people you see every day to a few units," he said. We can still see that people come together, that they see themselves in large numbers, they bring together children and elders. The French must understand something that perhaps we have not explained enough, it is that we can all carry the virus without knowing it, ”he laments.

More reassuring while remaining alarming, William Dab, former director general of health, in post from 2003 to 2005 after the heat wave crisis which had killed more than 15,000 people in France in the summer of 2003, confirms that "the epidemic may still be broken. "
