"Take immediate action to protect the health of migrants forced to live in informal rural settlements and ghettos." This is the appeal launched by Flai-CGIL secretary Giovanni Mininni in a letter addressed to the President of the Republic in collaboration with Terra Onlus.

"We express deep concern and feelings of extreme concern - reads the letter - for the thousands of foreign workers who live in the many ghettos and makeshift camps that have sprung up in our country. Many of them are employed in the agricultural sector, more than ever indispensable for the food security of citizenship and collective estate . As is known, the conditions of the laborers who today collect the products destined for our tables are often unacceptable: the slums in which they are forced to live are unhealthy and indecent places, at the antipodes of the very value of human rights. The risk of Covid-19 arriving in those aggregates, transforming them into outbreaks of the pandemic, is a cause for serious concern ".

In the video that enriches this appeal, the extreme conditions of life in which migrants are forced into a ghetto in the plain of Gioia Tauro , in Calabria. Around 300 laborers live in these conditions. And it is one of the smaller ghettos than there are especially in the South

"We believe that the Prefects, in light of the additional powers conferred on them by the decree law of 11 March - Flai and Terra Onlus then suggest - can autonomously take initiatives or adopt provisions aimed at making the migrants and asylum seekers present in the area safe, through the preparation and / or requisition of properties for accommodation purposes . The resources needed for any renovation and adaptation of the requisite properties could be drawn from the endowment of the Three-Year Plan against exploitation and manor. "

The letter-appeal has so far recorded the adhesions of Don Ciotti , president of Libera and Gruppo Abele , Luigi Manconi, Roberto Barbieri (director of Oxfam Italy), Riccardo Vito (president of the Democratic Judiciary), Valentina Calderone (director of 'A Buon Diritto'), Doctors for human rights (Medu), Marco Omizzolo (Eurispes Researcher and President of Modern Times), Danilo Chirico (DaSud president), Antonello Mangano (Terrelibere.org), Marina Galati (vice-president of the National Coordination of the Welcome Community), Csc Nuvola Rossa , Co.S.Mi. (Migrants Solidarity Committee), and Frontier Health .
