"Helping us means strictly respecting confinement": hospital doctors launched this Sunday, March 22, a "warning cry" in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic in France. "We can still avoid thousands of deaths," say these university professors, heads of clinics, interns, etc.
The signatories of the manifesto addressed to the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron and to the government a call for "strict respect of the measures of confinement at home to our fellow citizens throughout the territory, accompanied by a more explicit communication". "The drifts that we observe appear to us unacceptable for collective security," they insist. Also, we consider that non-compliance with the containment measures would require a strengthening of these measures. "
Here is the text of their manifesto:
“Appeal to the President of the Republic and Members of the Government
We, professors of university-hospital practitioners and hospital practitioners in France, heads of clinics, interns, seriously demand strict compliance with home confinement measures from our fellow citizens throughout the country, accompanied by more explicit communication.
All paramedical medical staff, in hospitals or in the city, work tirelessly, and to respond will continue to do so as effectively as possible to this epidemic of exceptional magnitude.
To help us is to strictly respect confinement. Despite this unfailing commitment from all of our healthcare teams, our healthcare capacities are reaching saturation point. As of now, extremely difficult and trying conditions of care are essential for care professionals who mobilize with exemplary solidarity.
We can still prevent thousands of deaths. Our Chinese colleagues, although not initially knowing the natural history, the possible symptoms and the contagiousness of the Covid-19 infection, were able, by a massive and controlled containment, to succeed in controlling the epidemic and limiting the number of death. Their experience and the analysis of the many scientific publications that appear today allow us to better define the means to contain this epidemic. Thus, only strict compliance with home confinement can limit the consequences of the epidemic by stopping the spread of Covid-19. Indeed, despite the hard work of our researchers, we must not rely in the short term on effective or validated vaccines or therapies, which will surely arrive, but too late.

The National Inter-union of interns, who are on the front line in this exhausting and merciless battle against the Covid-19, sent a letter to the President of the Republic yesterday which underlines the inevitable necessity of strict confinement. The purpose of this letter is to relay and amplify this message.
We are aware that the effectiveness of containment measures requires education for their acceptability, with the guarantee of everyone's subsistence during their application. This is why we wanted to forcefully recall the imperative respect for home confinement.
All the caregivers are very moved by the signs of support from the entire population every evening at 8 p.m. They will be even more so if everyone scrupulously follows the rules of life that will help contain the epidemic. The drifts that we observe appear to us unacceptable for collective security. Also, we consider that non-compliance with the containment measures would require a strengthening of these measures. "
The petitioners
The collective of signatories claims to represent "more than 50,000 French hospital doctors, interns, heads of clinics, hospital practitioners, medical teachers from all over France, from the Antilles to Paris and from all disciplines, medical, psychiatric and surgical". Among the signatories, are the Intersyndicat of hospital practitioners (INPH) which federates the 17 unions of hospital practitioners, and the Intersyndicat of interns (ISNI) which represents the 18,000 interns.
