Electronic bracelet to check that suspected and confirmed coronavirus cases respect quarantine. This is the approach to block the spread of Covid-19 chosen by the interim government of Bolivia, a country that records 268 positive cases and 19 victims of the pandemic. According to what was announced by the Minister of Justice Alvaro Coimbra and reported by the Abi news agency, the devices will be placed on suspected cases and confirmed in isolation, in order to strengthen controls and create a map of their position at national level.
"It seems to me a good measure what we proposed to put these bracelets on suspected people (of having contracted the coronavirus) and other people who already have the infection, but are isolated in a house or hotel," said Coimbra.
"We have seen that there are people who are not capable or not of maturity to understand that when you are among the suspected cases in quarantine, or you have the disease and you are in isolation, you must have the responsibility to stay at home" , said the minister at the press conference. Initially, electronic bracelets were part of a pilot project to control people deprived of their liberty who benefit from alternative measures to prison, to solve the problem of overcrowding in prisons.
The government's plan is to implement the initiative across the country, and the measure has already materialized in the department of La Paz, where the Covid-19 Emergency Committee yesterday approved the use of electronic anklets for people. suspected of coronaviruses and isolated in their homes in order to trace them. "People who are at home must use these anklets which have a chip that will allow us to monitor their position," said Public Works Minister Ivan Arias.
The minister explained that the La Paz department has 500 anklets with GPS technology available, which will record the movement of people suspected of having contracted the disease to allow it to be checked by the police.
