Coronavirus: "Is hearing loss one of the symptoms?"

2020-04-17T15:13:26.337Z

There is currently no data to indicate that hearing loss is one of the symptoms of Covid-19.

Every day, Le Parisien is mobilized to answer your questions around the coronavirus. Today we are interested in the questioning of Philippe, who asks us if hearing loss is one of the symptoms of Covid-19.

We found no studies or evidence of hearing loss when you were infected with the new coronavirus. "We have no data and this has never mentioned," said Parisian Bruno Grandbastien, president of the French Society of Hospital Hygiene.

The doctor is still cautious, referring to the loss of taste and smell. While the authorities were initially reserved, these two disorders seem to be symptoms of Covid-19. “We realized this a bit by chance, thanks to a North American academy. Until then, no one had lifted this hare ”, underlines Bruno Grandbastien.

Several weeks of decline in Europe

According to a study conducted by French and Belgian researchers on a panel of 417 patients with mild symptoms of Covid-19, 88% of them suffer from impaired taste and 85% from loss of smell. "This may mean that the virus has an ability to affect the central nervous system, so perhaps also impact hearing," said the president of the French Society of Hygiene Hospital.

That being said, doctors in Europe now have several weeks of hindsight on the disease to establish the symptoms. It is therefore very likely that they would have noticed it if hearing loss were one of the symptoms of Covid-19.
